Well I have been thinking about it and decided it's time to get it up and going again. I found a great site through a friend that always has great tips and ideas and recipes for food storage!!

http://www.myfoodstoragedeals.blogspot.com/

Check it out! We have been building our food storage a lot this year. One thing we have been doing that is kind of like a "duh" is if there is a deal on something like ranch dressing, instead of getting one, we buy two. If it's a really good deal we'll get four or five and before you know it, you have a fantastic food storage!

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU REFRESHED YOUR 72 HOUR KITS?

Food Storage Item of the Week

Get extra C and calcium with Vitamin D. They have some great ideas for food rotation, a food calculator, emergency kits you can customize. Take a look at all the items they have available. It gives some really great ideas of things you may want to add to your own emergency kits, First Aid kits or food storage. www.providentliving.org is cheaper for basics, like wheat, rice, beans & quick oats & of course going to your local cannery is about 1/2 the cost of shelf reliance because you do the work yourself. For those of you who may not have a cannery or the time readily available ordering off the interne may be a great option. So now the question, How prepared are you???For the first Family Home Evening of each month we work on food storage. Tonight we are going to go over what we have, organize it & print off a list from food calculator to see where we are at.I was in a meeting Sunday where we were STRONGLY earged to get our selves prepared. We are planning a head for Christmas gifts of food storage for some of our family members. Probably not the most exciting gift to unwrap, but I wouldn't trade excitement for the peace of mind being prepared brings.Check out Shelf Reliance to get some new ideas.

Heather Miller

New Food Storage Site!

A big thanks to my friend Natalie who sent me the link to this site. In an effort to help everyone with thier food storage, I thought it might be helpful if you had an idea of how much to get. Also check out the food calculator @ http://lds.about.com/library/bl/faq/blcalculator.htm I highlight what we are working on for the month & then check it off when we've completed it.

(Keep in mind you can purchase beans, rice, wheat & quick oats online - They will be shipped directly to your home for about 4.00 a case more than if you can them yourself @ the cannery. It's SOOOOOO easy. Personally I order what I can online & save the cannery for the other stuff)

*This week's item is Rice. I hope they are helpful & useful to you.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints has a wonderful website. http://www.providentliving.org/ With many useful things relating to food storage, personal finance & Humanitarian aide.

This weeks Tip, GET STARTED! It's easy to get overwhelmed as many of you may be feeling. Take a deep breath & lets begin. Plan out what you would be able to store for a one week supply of food for you & your family. 7 Breakfasts, lunches & dinners. For those of you who are able to shop @ places like Costco & Sams Club you can purchase a large can of quaker instant oatmeal for very inexpensive. A case of ramen noodles for lunches & a case of soup. You'll have more than you weeks supply for about $20.00. "The faithful need not fear." Do your best, make a conscience effort to start & continue your food storage & take comfort that when we do all we can do, the Lord picks up where we fall short.
Check back next week for more ideas.

Heather Miller (Nickell's friend)

More Ideas

I talked to my friend Heather because she is always putting up good ideas for food storage on her blog. We try to be prepared for everything, but I have used my storage most often during employment crises, and the personal care items you get from the bishops storehouse are not what you are used to using. I’m sure this would be the case if we had to rely on outside sources for these items at any time. Make your crisis easier and store the items you use daily. Save the change each week in a kitty to be used for the weeks you may exceed $5.00 (like wheat or milk)

You will end up with:
500 pounds of wheat
180 pound of sugar
40 pounds of powdered milk
12 pounds of salk
10 pounds of honey
5 pounds of peanut butter
45 cans of tomato soup
15 cans of cream of mushroom soup
15 cans of chicken soup
24 cans of tuna
21 boxes of macaroni and cheese
500 asprin
1000 multi-vitamins
6 pounds of yeast
6 pounds of shortening
12 pounds of macaroni

This should be enough to sustain two people for one year. For every two people in you family add $5.00 more and double or triple the amount of the time you are buying that week.

WATER !!! WATER!!!
Water storage is critical but easy. It is recommended that we store a 2-week supply (estimated 14 gallons per person). Store water in plastic bottles (not milk jugs, or containers which held non -edible products) barrels or even in mylar bags. For storage add 1/2 -1 teaspoon of bleach per 5 gallons.
Water in water-beds, water heaters, toilet tanks or cisterns may also be used, after water purification.
